5 Early Warning Signs of Damp in Your Home

A musty smell is the first clue. If a room smells stale even after airing, moisture is probably trapped in a wall, subfloor or ceiling space.

Peeling paint and bubbling plaster come next. Water moving through a wall pushes the finish off from behind, often long before a stain appears.

Black or green mould in corners, behind furniture or on the ceiling shows that condensation or a leak is feeding it. Wiping it away without fixing the cause only brings it back.

Condensation on windows every morning means indoor humidity is too high. Better ventilation, extractor fans and sealing gaps usually help, but persistent damp should be inspected.

Finally, a damp or rising smell under the house, soft timber floors or stained skirting boards point to subfloor moisture. Book an inspection early: thermal imaging can find the source without opening walls.
